Definitions of General Medical Health Specialties

Specialty Description

A

Acupuncture
The practice of insertion of needles into specific body locations to relieve pain, to induce surgical anesthesia, and for therapeutic purposes.
Allergy Diagnosis and treatment of allergic conditions.
Allergy/Immunology Diagnosis and treatment of allergic conditions and diseases of the immune system.

C

Cardiovascular Disease
The diagnosis and treatment of the heart and blood vessels; a subspecialty of internal medicine.
Cardiovascular Surgery Surgery of the heart and blood vessels.
Chiropractic The science of curing human ailments by adjustments and manipulation of various parts of the body, particularly the spinal column, based on the theory that all disease is traceable to organic malfunctions of the nerves, usually caused by misalignment of the spinal column.
Critical Care The diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury in which there is danger of death.

D

Dermatology
The diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases and disorders.

E

Ear/Nose/Throat

Emergency Medicine Specialization in the emergency treatment of disease, trauma and injuries in the acute phase.
Endocrinology The diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ductless glands (thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries and testes); a specialty of internal medicine.

Family Practice
The diagnosis and treatment of general medical conditions. Specialization in the primary care of all age groups and special family dynamics.

G

Gastroenterology
The diagnosis and operative treatment of disease and injuries not covered by surgical subspecialties.
General Practice The diagnosis and treatment of general medical conditions.
General Surgery The diagnosis and operative treatment of disease and injuries not covered by surgical subspecialties.
Genetics The study of genes and their heredity.
Gerontology Practice limited to the treatment of disease in the elderly.
Gynecology Specialization in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders and diseases of the female reproductive organs. (See also Ob/Gyn.)

Hand Surgery
Specialization in hand reconstruction and the surgical repair of injuries to the hand.
Hematology The diagnosis and treatment of disease and disorders of the blood forming tissues and blood; a subspecialty of internal medicine.

I

Immunology

Infectious Diseases The diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases; a subspecialty of internal medicine.
Internal Medicine The diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases and disorders of the internal structures of the human body.

M

Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The diagnosis and treatment of disorders relating to the mother or the fetus.
Metabolic Disease A specialty in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions relating to the physical and chemical processes in the human body.
Midwives (Certified Nurse) A nurse certified in the discipline of nursing and the practice of assisting in childbirth.

Neonatology
A pediatrician specializing in the treatment and care of premature and/or high - risk newborn babies.
Nephrology The diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney; a subspecialty of internal medicine.
Neurological Surgery Diagnosis and surgery of the nervous system and brain.
Neurology Specialization in the medical diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system.
Nuclear Medicine Specialization in the use of radioactive materials in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Nutrition The study of foods and their use in diet and therapy.

O

Ob/Gyn
Specialization in the treatment of disorders and diseases of the female reproductive system and the management of care during pregnancy and childbirth.
Oncology The diagnosis and treatment of tumors and cancer; a subspecialty of internal medicine.
Ophthalmology Medical and surgical treatment of disease and disorders of the eye, including the evaluation of vision and prescription of lenses for visual problems.
Optometry Practice limited to the examination of the eyes for defects and the prescribing of corrective lenses.
Oral Surgery/Dentists A specialist whose practice is limited to surgery of the mouth and related structures.
Orthopedic Surgery Specialization in the medical and surgical treatment of ligaments, joints, muscles, tendons, bones and related structures.
Otolaryngology (ENT) Specialization in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose and throat.

P

Pathology
A specialty in the study and treatment of structural and functional changes in tissues and organs of the body which cause or are caused by disease.
Pediatric Neonatology The diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the newborn infant.
Pediatrics Treatment of disease and management of health and development of children.
Physical Medicine A specialty in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury, and the rehabilitation from impairments and disabilities, using physical agents such as light, heat, cold, water, electricity, therapeutic exercise, and mechanical apparatus, and sometimes pharmaceutical agents. Also called Physiatry.
Physical Therapy Treatment of disease and disabilities using mechanical means to assist in rehabilitation and restoration of normal bodily functions.
Plastic Surgery The surgical repair or modification of tissue and/or bone for restoration and rehabilitation or cosmetic purposes.
Podiatry A surgical specialty limited to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle.
Proctology Practice restricted to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the rectum and anus. Training is usually in the colon and rectal field.
Pulmonary Medicine The diagnosis and treatment of disease of the respiratory system; a subspecialty of internal medicine.

R

Radiology
Specialization in the use of X-rays and other forms of radioactive energy in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or trauma.
Radiation Oncology Specialization in the use of radioactive energy in treatment of malignant diseases.
Rheumatology Specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatism and arthritis; a subspecialty of internal medicine.

S

Speech Pathology
A pathologist licensed in the treatment of speech disorders.

T

Thoracic Surgery
Diagnosis and surgery of the chest and lungs. A surgeon with this specialty may also be qualified to do cardiovascular surgery.

U

Urology
The diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment of disease and disorders of the urinary tract and genital organs of the male and the urinary tract of the female.

V

Vascular Surgery
Operative treatment of the blood vessels.
